Bryant's reaction came after a comparison was made by quarterbacks coach Quincy Avery. Bryant took to X (formerly Twitter) and simply stated, "No.. and Mendoza better."
Let's break down the stats. In his Heisman-winning season, Bradford showcased impressive numbers: a 67.9% completion rate, 4,721 passing yards, and a whopping 50 touchdowns compared to just 8 interceptions. He led Oklahoma to a national championship appearance, though they ultimately fell short.
Now, consider Mendoza. Entering the Peach Bowl, he had played in 14 games this season, boasting a 72.3% completion rate, 36 touchdowns, and only 6 interceptions.
Statistically, Bradford's Heisman season was superior. However, Bryant's perspective suggests he believes Mendoza possesses a higher level of talent.
But here's where it gets controversial... Bryant's view might be influenced by Bradford's NFL career, which, despite its moments of success, didn't quite reach the heights he achieved in college. Bradford spent 8 seasons in the NFL, earning the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year award in 2010 and leading the league in completion percentage in 2016.
Bryant's high expectations for Mendoza are not isolated. ESPN's NFL Draft expert, Mel Kiper Jr., has already placed Mendoza high on his big board, projecting him as the No. 2 pick. Kiper notes Mendoza's quick decision-making, excellent ball placement, and sufficient mobility to gain first downs.
Adding to the hype, Mendoza led Indiana to a dominant victory over Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal, completing 17 of 20 passes for 177 yards and 5 touchdowns, without throwing an interception.
Now, Mendoza has the chance to solidify his legacy further. Indiana will face Miami in the national championship on January 19th, live on ESPN.
