Prepare to be captivated: Florence + the Machine unleashes a raw, emotional 'scream of feminine fury' in their latest musical offering. This isn't just an album; it's a journey into the depths of personal experience, exploring themes of trauma, power, and the complexities of womanhood.
This album, titled Everybody Scream, marks the sixth studio album for Florence Welch as Florence + the Machine. The music builds on the mystical and magical themes that are central to her work. The recording session took place live at Electric Lady Studios in New York City.
But here's where it gets deeply personal: Welch's inspiration for the album was profoundly shaped by a miscarriage and subsequent emergency surgery. She delved into a primal feminine energy to navigate the physical and emotional aftermath. She also explored the history of witchcraft and magic at London's Warburg Institute, seeking meaning and understanding.
"I think the imagination is this form of escape; mythology is a form of escape," Welch explains, reflecting on her quest to find meaning in her experiences. She sought to explore different forms of power and connect with women who had lived unconventional lives.
And this is the part most people miss: The album also delves into the duality of performance and identity. Welch explores the tension between her performing persona and her 'normal' self. The title track was co-written with Mitski, adding another layer of depth.
Welch shared insights into the sacrifices women sometimes make to succeed in their careers, a topic that sparked a meaningful conversation with Mitski. Mitski highlighted the unique intimacy that these experiences bring, something their male counterparts may never fully understand.
