A new chapter begins for the Hiawatha School Board! On January 15, 2026, Phil Roberts officially joined the Hiawatha School Board, marking a fresh start for the district. Having been sworn in the previous week, Roberts steps into the role after winning the election last November, succeeding Jacquie Spihlmann, who chose not to run for re-election. Board President Roni Tietjens warmly welcomed Roberts, setting a positive tone for the future.
One of the key topics discussed was the school's food service program. Ruth Schowengerdt, the on-site manager for OPAA Food Management, provided an update, highlighting new menu additions introduced this school year. The clear winner among students? The walking taco! Schowengerdt also shared encouraging participation rates: a 40% breakfast participation and a 76% lunch participation, both up from October. They are also working on offering a wider variety of entree options, including protein packs tailored for student athletes. And this is the part most people miss... the school is adapting to the needs of the students.
Following an executive session, the board addressed several resignations. Kim Lillie is stepping down as Middle School athletic director, Scotti Hanf as a 2nd-grade teacher, and Linda Miller as a high school social studies teacher, all effective at the end of the current school year. Additionally, Kristin Clark resigned from her position as school nurse.
