King Charles Shares His Cancer Journey: A Personal Message (2026)

King Charles to share personal cancer experiences in TV broadcast

In a move aimed at raising awareness, King Charles has recorded a personal message about his battle with cancer, which will feature in this year’s Stand Up To Cancer campaign, a collaboration between Cancer Research UK and Channel 4.

Buckingham Palace confirmed that the King will speak about his recovery journey as a cancer patient in a video message set to air at 20:00 GMT on Friday. The recording took place at Clarence House two weeks ago and will underscore the importance of cancer screening, encouraging more people to pursue early detection.

This represents a rare health update from the monarch, who has been receiving ongoing treatment since revealing his diagnosis in February 2024. It is not expected that he will disclose the specific type of cancer.

Stand Up To Cancer, an annual initiative, raises funds for medical research and treatment while promoting routine screenings to boost early diagnosis.

The King’s willingness to speak openly about his illness—often living with cancer while continuing his official duties—has been aimed at increasing public awareness and encouraging more people to get tested. This broadcast adds a personal dimension to that effort.

To date, the King has balanced a heavy schedule with treatment, not letting his illness define him. This year he has undertaken several international trips, including visits to Italy and Canada, and has hosted a record number of inbound state visits to the UK, including the German president just last week.

Earlier this week, the King attended a thoughtful Advent service at Westminster Abbey, describing the season as one of optimism and hope in his remarks.

The Stand Up To Cancer special on Channel 4, airing Friday evening, will feature hosts and celebrities such as Davina McCall, Adam Hills, and Clare Balding, all of whom have faced cancer themselves. The program will advocate for cancer screening and address fears surrounding checks.

McCall publicly discussed her breast cancer surgery last month, Balding spoke about thyroid cancer more than a decade ago, and Hills has referenced his late father’s battle with stomach cancer and leukemia. The broadcast will also reach out to roughly nine million people in the UK who are not up to date with NHS screening guidelines, guiding viewers to an online checker for eligibility across breast, bowel, and cervical cancer tests.

In a bid to demystify cancer checks and highlight the benefits of early detection, the program will feature live segments from cancer clinics at Addenbrooke’s and Royal Papworth hospitals in Cambridge.

“I want to remove the fear surrounding cancer screening and remind everyone that they are not alone in this,” McCall said.

Since 2012, the Stand Up to Cancer project has raised £113 million and is funding 73 clinical trials involving about 13,000 patients.

During a reception for cancer charities in April, the King spoke about recognizing the daunting and sometimes frightening experience faced by cancer patients and their families. He also reflected on how those darkest moments can be illuminated by compassion and by the care of others.

The Palace has not disclosed the specific cancer type or the treatment details. The King’s cancer was first discovered following a prostate procedure.
