But here's where it gets controversial... The most significant hurdle for Miami's playoff hopes is their head-to-head record against Notre Dame. Despite the Hurricanes' victory over the Fighting Irish earlier in the season, Notre Dame currently holds the 10th rank, two spots ahead of Miami. The 'Canes triumphed over Notre Dame with a score of 27-24 during their season opener on August 31st.
Notre Dame's season started with a couple of surprising losses, including the one against Miami. However, the Irish rallied, winning their last 10 games, including victories against ranked USC and Pitt teams. This impressive turnaround has undoubtedly bolstered their playoff argument.
Miami, on the other hand, began the season strong, going 5-0 before a 5-2 finish. These two losses, especially the home defeat against unranked Louisville and the overtime loss to SMU on the road, could be detrimental to their playoff chances. Despite these setbacks, Miami has showcased their resilience, winning their last four games by significant margins.
Miami is banking on their head-to-head victory to sway the committee. After their regular-season finale win against Pitt, head coach Mario Cristobal emphasized the importance of head-to-head results. He stated, "The best part about football? You get to settle it on the field where head-to-head is always the number one criteria regarding anything athletics and football."
Conversely, Notre Dame's head coach, Marcus Freeman, believes his team is among the top 12 in the nation, and he's counting on the committee to select the best teams, regardless of specific head-to-head results.
