In a bold statement, former Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni has thrown his support behind the idea of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli chasing their World Cup dreams in 2027. Dhoni, a legend in his own right, believes that age should not be a deciding factor in the future of these senior stars in ODI cricket.
But here's where it gets controversial... Dhoni argues that performance and fitness are the true indicators of a player's worth, not the number of candles on their birthday cake.
"Why should someone be ruled out just because they're in their 30s?" Dhoni asks. "Age is not a criteria. It's all about how well they perform and how fit they are."
And this is the part most people miss... Dhoni emphasizes that the decision to continue playing should ultimately rest with the players themselves. If they keep delivering on the field and have the passion to represent their country, why should they be forced to retire?
"The value of experienced players in a young team cannot be overstated," Dhoni adds. "Experience is earned through years of high-pressure matches, and it's a valuable asset."
With both Rohit and Kohli continuing to build their ODI credentials, the debate over India's senior core heading into 2027 is far from over. Since the Australia tour, Kohli has scored an impressive 616 runs in just nine matches, averaging an outstanding 88. Rohit, on the other hand, has contributed 409 runs at an average of 51.
