Muhammad Ali Honored with USPS Forever Stamp: A Tribute to the Greatest Boxer (2026)

The United States Postal Service (USPS) has released a special Forever Stamp honoring the legendary Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers of all time. The stamp, unveiled at a ceremony at the University of Louisville, celebrates Ali's remarkable life and impact on the world. Ali's widow, Lonnie Ali, attended the event and shared her thoughts on the stamp's significance.

Ali's legacy extends far beyond the boxing ring. He was a three-time world heavyweight champion, but his true greatness lay in his activism and humanitarian efforts. Ali was appointed a UN Messenger of Peace in 1998 and received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005. His passing in 2016 marked the end of a remarkable journey, as he bravely fought Parkinson's disease.

The Muhammad Ali Center initiated a public awareness campaign in 2022, aptly named 'Get the champ a stamp.' The process of creating commemorative stamps is rigorous, involving years of selection and review by the Citizen Stamps Advisory Committee. The campaign's efforts finally paid off with the official announcement on Monday, leading to the stamp's unveiling on Thursday.

At the ceremony, Lonnie Ali expressed her husband's deep appreciation for the stamp, highlighting his understanding of its power. She said, 'Muhammad knew the impact of his words, which could heal, divide, or unite. He was a master communicator, and this stamp represents his legacy.' The stamp features a 1974 black-and-white photograph of Ali, showcasing his iconic boxing stance and capturing his lightning speed and deceptive power.

The USPS art director, Antonio Alcalá, designed the stamp, printing 22 million copies for a one-time release. Ron Stroman, the USPS governor, described the stamp as a tribute to Ali's conviction, dedication, and spirituality, which continue to inspire generations. The stamp's design, with Ali's name in alternating placement, pays homage to classic boxing posters and the global chants of 'Ali! Ali! Ali!' that followed him.

The ceremony celebrated Ali's altruistic nature and political courage, emphasizing his impact beyond the ring. Lonnie Ali emphasized that Ali's greatest legacy was his compassion and his commitment to serving others. She concluded, 'The greatest tribute we can offer Muhammad is to follow his example and make our own mark on the world.' The stamp's release is a fitting tribute to a man whose influence continues to resonate, inspiring millions through his words and actions.
