A tennis legend's departure from the union he co-founded has sparked intrigue and debate. Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old Serbian tennis icon, has severed ties with the Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), citing concerns over transparency and governance. In 2021, Djokovic and Canadian tennis player Vasek Pospisil founded the PTPA as a breakaway player union. The union's mission was to address what it deemed an "unsustainable" schedule and to advocate for player welfare. In March 2025, the PTPA took a bold step, launching legal action against tennis' governing bodies, including the ATP and WTA tours. The PTPA accused these bodies of "anti-competitive practices" and a "blatant disregard for player welfare."

Djokovic emphasized his pride in the PTPA's initial vision of giving players a stronger, independent voice. However, he added, "It has become clear that my values and approach are no longer aligned with the current direction of the organization."
The PTPA's legal action also highlighted alleged collusion between the tours and tournaments, which could restrict competition and prize money. The complaint was supported by 12 players, including Pospisil and Nick Kyrgios, who claimed to act on behalf of all players.
But not everyone was on board. Current world number one, Carlos Alcaraz, despite previously criticizing the hectic schedule, stated he did not support the legal action.
