Sam Bennett's Heart Surgery Journey: From Palpitations to Recovery (2026)

Former Tour de France champion, Sam Bennett, has opened up about his recent heart surgery, revealing a health scare that left him with more questions than answers.

"I had these palpitations, and I was clueless about what was happening," Bennett shared in an exclusive interview. "It was a scary moment, but I'm grateful for the support I received."

The 35-year-old Irish sprinter, known for his impressive wins in the 2020 Tour and the Vuelta a España two years later, has had a challenging journey since. Withdrawing from races due to Covid-19 and an unexplained decline in performance, Bennett's career took an unexpected turn.

"It's like a puzzle with missing pieces," he explained. "The atrial fibrillation episode in November was a wake-up call, but I believe the symptoms were there much earlier."

Atrial fibrillation, a condition where the heart beats irregularly and often faster than normal, is what Bennett underwent surgery for. The procedure, called ablation, aims to correct the electrical signals in the heart.

"It's a straightforward process," Bennett described. "Doctors insert a catheter through the leg vein, near the pelvis, and burn off the faulty parts of the heart. They then stimulate the heart to check for any other issues."

The recovery process was not without its challenges. Bennett had to take blood thinners and avoid road training due to the risk of excessive bleeding. His procedure was more complex than usual, requiring a three-month healing period for his heart.

"We took it slow," Bennett said of his return to training. "I had to be cautious, especially after the flu I caught in early January. But the training camp was a turning point. I felt a quick progression, and it gave me hope."

Bennett believes his full return to training was around mid-January, and he's aiming for a racing comeback in March. Despite the setbacks, he remains optimistic.

"The last few years have been a struggle," he admitted. "I felt something was off, but I couldn't put my finger on it. The timeline matches up with my Covid diagnosis, but I can't say for certain if it's related."

Bennett's case is not unique in the world of sports. Heart arrythmias have affected many athletes, and studies show endurance exercise can increase the risk. However, Bennett's message is one of hope and awareness.

"I want people to know that this is treatable," he emphasized. "It's scary when you experience it, but it's important to seek help and share your story. You can recover and get back to your best."

The role of modern technology, like smartwatches with ECG capabilities, cannot be understated. Bennett believes these devices can provide early detection and peace of mind.

"Having a smartwatch with ECG can be a game-changer," he said. "It allows you to catch any abnormalities in real-time and seek professional help promptly."

As Bennett prepares for his new season with the Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team, he's determined to reclaim his top form. With the support of head coach Kurt Bogaerts, who helped him through a previous slump, Bennett is confident.

"I want to prove myself again," he shared. "The pain of losing races is real, and it drives me. I want to be at my best, competing with the best. If I can do that, I know I'll get my chance in the Grand Tours."

Bennett's journey is a reminder that setbacks can be overcome with resilience and the right support. His story inspires athletes and fans alike, offering a glimpse of hope and a lesson in perseverance.
