A bold vision for the White House is taking shape, and it's causing quite a stir. Former President Donald Trump has unveiled an ambitious plan to transform the East Wing and create a grand ballroom, but this project is not without its controversies.
In a recent post on Truth Social, Trump shared a rendering of the proposed facade, showcasing a magnificent new East Wing that he claims will be an "identical" match in height and scale to the historic executive mansion. The sketch, captured from the nearby Treasury Building, offers a glimpse of the future East Wing, replacing the old, dilapidated structure that had sparked public outcry when it was demolished last October.
But here's where it gets interesting: the new design includes an architectural feature not seen before - a pediment above the columns, creating a striking triangular gable. This addition, first hinted at in July's renderings, has now been expanded to sit atop eight columns, a subtle yet significant tweak.
The project, estimated to cost a whopping $400 million, will encompass a 90,000-square-foot "New East Wing" and a ballroom capable of accommodating 1,000 people. This marks a significant upgrade from initial plans, which proposed a $200 million ballroom seating 650 people.
However, this grand vision has faced legal challenges. The National Trust for Historic Preservation sued the Trump administration in December, arguing that the construction had bypassed the necessary review processes, lacked adequate environmental assessments, and failed to seek congressional authorization. Trump, however, disputed these allegations, emphasizing the unique nature of the White House and its grounds, which he believes exempts the project from such requirements.
And this is the part most people miss: days after a hearing on the lawsuit, Trump dropped a bombshell. In a Truth Social post, he revealed a "Top Secret fact" - the involvement of the U.S. military and Secret Service in various aspects of the project, including design. He emphasized that this level of involvement and approval from the highest authorities should put an end to any legal challenges.
The controversy surrounding this project is set to reach a critical point on March 5, when NCPC members are expected to vote on the proposal. An online portal will open on February 12, allowing the public to register and have their say.
