The Ultimate NBA Experience: A Live Game Adventure
Imagine feeling the electric atmosphere of a packed arena, the crowd's energy buzzing around you, and the thrill of witnessing every play and shot up close. That's the magic of attending a live NBA game, an experience that leaves a lasting impression on fans and students alike.
A group of students had the opportunity to immerse themselves in this unique setting during a field trip organized by Associate Professor Sungick Min. They witnessed the Cleveland Cavaliers take on the Charlotte Hornets at the Rocket Arena on December 14th. The excitement was palpable, and the students' firsthand account highlights the stark contrast between watching the game on TV and being there in person.
"The energy in the arena was incredible!" exclaimed Christian Dingee, a first-year student from Brooklyn, NY. "It's a whole different ball game when you're in the crowd, feeling the buzz and seeing the players' reactions."
Dr. Min, who also serves as an internship coordinator in Sport Management and Coaching, emphasized the educational value of this experience. "This field trip offers a practical understanding of sport marketing and revenue generation. Students get to see sponsorship activation, in-arena advertising, merchandise sales, and premium seating concepts in action. It's a bridge between theory and reality."
The students were seated just a few rows from the court, providing an unparalleled view. Anthony Misencik, a Sport Management major, described their seats as "amazing."
The crowd's initial indifference transformed into a roaring atmosphere as the game progressed. The intensity reached its peak during overtime, where the Cavaliers' late-game surge, outscoring the Hornets 32-23 in the fourth quarter, only to lose in overtime 119-111, left a lasting impression on the spectators.
Ethan Drummond, a Social Work major, shared his first-ever NBA game experience, "It was incredible! Seeing the athletes up close and feeling the energy in the arena made it so much more fun than watching it on TV."
The game promotions added to the excitement, with challenges and giveaways during timeouts and between quarters. T-shirt tosses, mini basketballs, and white noise-making tubes were among the interactive elements, creating a festive atmosphere.

The experience extended beyond the game itself. The convenient parking, unlimited food and drinks, and overall positive atmosphere contributed to a memorable day. Christian Dingee reflected on the experience, "Attending the game with Dr. Min and fellow students was incredible. It left me feeling positive and reflective, reminding me of how much I've grown and the rewarding nature of the semester."
This field trip is a regular occurrence, organized by Dr. Min for his SPMG 100: Pathway to Success or SPMG: Principles of Sport Management class. The students agreed that it was a valuable learning opportunity, fostering engagement, motivation, and a deeper understanding of the sport industry's intricacies.
"The field trip enhances student engagement and motivation, reinforcing classroom concepts through immersive learning. It encourages reflection, discussion, and critical thinking about best practices in the global sport industry," Dr. Min explained. "Attending a field trip like this allows students to visualize potential career paths in professional sport organizations and grasp the scale and complexity of the industry."
